MediaLaws is pleased to share the event ‘What’s in a joke? Humor in Free Speech Jurisprudence and Content Moderation’, an initiative by the Global Freedom of Expression Institute in Columbia University. This event seeks to explore the grey areas between satire, defamation, provocative jokes and hate speech, or parody and copyright violation in the digital area.

This event is organised as part of the publication of a forthcoming toolkit- entitled ‘What’s in a Joke? Assessing Humor in Free Speech Jurisprudence and Content Moderation. It aims to help legal professionals, content moderators and policymakers confront these challenges.

This toolkit is authored by Alberto Godiolo (University of Groningen), Sabine Jacques (University of Liverpool), Ariadna Matamoros Fernandez (Queensland University of Technology and Jennifer Young (University of Groningen). The authors will present an advanced draft of the toolkit and collect feedback. The final version is set for publication in January 2025.

The presentations will be followed by an open Q&A and a roundtable with four members of the project’s Advisory Board, namely Lady Justice Stella Isibhakhomen Anukam (African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights), JUDr. Barbora Bukovská , Mehdi Benchelah (UNESCO), and Judge Darian Pavli (European Court of Human Rights).
